We are looking for a female Home Assistant to join our team. You will be passionate about supporting children who have been living or working on the streets to turn their lives around and begin working towards a brighter future.
You will be qualified in social work or counselling to a minimum of diploma level and will have experience of working with children in a social work setting.
You will provide love, care and counselling for all children living in the S.A.L.V.E. Halfway Homes to help them to flourish in their personal physical, emotional and educational wellbeing. As the home assistant, you will be responsible for cooking for these children, ensuring they receive balanced and nutritious meals daily.
Key Activities
The following activities are intended as a guide to the main responsibilities of the post and are not an exhaustive list of duties and tasks. The post-holder may be required to undertake other duties that are not listed below, at the direction of their manager. The job description may be amended from time to time after consultation with the post holder.
Daily activities
• Ensure that the S.A.L.V.E. Centre is running effectively and that children receive high quality care
- Ensure that the timetable of activities is being kept to – make sure meals are ready on time so that the timetable is not disrupted.
- Provide extra counselling, attention and care to new children as they join the rehabilitation programme to help them to settle into the home.
- Enforce centre rules for all children
- Oversee the children to ensure that they are regularly bathing and washing their clothes.
- Make sure that the children are keeping their bedrooms and the home clean and tidy and are all included in taking part in daily chores.
- Take responsibility for the wellbeing of all children in your care and report any concerns regarding their physical or mental wellbeing to your manager or their case manager in a timely manager.
- Report any safeguarding concerns to your manager in a timely manner.
• Planning ahead to ensure there is enough food, water, clothes, shoes, beds and bedding for the children currently in the Centre and communicating early to make sure we can overcome any gaps.
• Planning and overseeing the preparation of a balanced diet for the children in the S.A.L.V.E. Centre.
• Keeping accurate registers of children including times of intake, departure from the centre and their reasons for leaving.
Programme Development
• Participate in regular programme evaluation and learning reviews.
• Contribute ideas for development or improvement openly in team meetings or directly to your manager.
Finance
• To make sure the budget, accountability and transparency of the money used in the S.A.L.V.E. Centre for the general upkeep of the home and the children living there is being used properly.
In order to be considered for this post you will have to demonstrate that you already have:
Qualifications
• Diploma or degree holder in a social work or counselling qualification
• Have attended relevant courses and training modules, especially in counselling and catering
Experience
• Experience of doing social work/ counselling
• Experience of catering for groups of up to 50 people, including planning for quantities of food needed, budgeting for that food and cooking it
• Experience of managing a budget
• Experience of using computers and various IT programmes
• Experience of working in a residential care setting would be a bonus
Skills
• Ability to work well with other team members and develop positive relationships.
• Kind, compassionate and caring
• Good communication skills and ability to communicate with different audiences – i.e. children/ colleagues etc
• Strong budgeting and money management skills
• Patient and able to resolve conflict amongst children in a calm manner
• Good cooking skills
• Computer literate
• Fluent in English, and either Luganda or Lusoga
Knowledge
• Strong understanding of child protection and safeguarding
• Understanding and commitment to providing person centred support.
• Understanding of professional ethics.
Salary
• You will be paid a gross salary of 675,000 UGX per month during your 6 month probationary period.
• Upon completion of your probationary period, and being confirmed into the role, this will rise to 790,000 UGX gross per month.
• All pay is subject to PAYE and NSSF.
Please note that contacts are fixed term contracts that and are due for review related to renewal annually in April.
You will be expected to be able to transport yourself to and from your base of work, which is in Namulesa. But any further travel for the role will be covered by the organisation. Meals will also be provided whilst you are working.
