In September 2024 we are inviting everyone to Step up for S.A.L.V.E.!
Join our challenge to raise £10,000 for children on the streets.
What is Step up for S.A.L.V.E.?
Step up for S.A.L.V.E. is a fundraising initiative taking place throughout the month of September 2024.
We are aiming to raise £10,000 as a group through individual challenges. All money raised will support children living and working on the streets of Jinja.
You can find the group fundraising page on Total Giving, here.
How can I step up for S.A.L.V.E.?
The joy of Step up for S.A.L.V.E. is that you can do whatever you want at any point throughout September. Ideas include:
- Running a 10k in your local area
- Organising a bake sale
- Doing a repeat exercise such as 10,000 steps a day
- Swimming a certain distance across the month
- Running an event such as a dress-down or crazy hair day at your workplace or school
What difference will Stepping up for S.A.L.V.E. make?
By Stepping up for S.A.L.V.E. this September, you will be supporting children who are living and working on the streets of Jinja. Children on the streets are as young as 3. They struggle to get food to eat and are at constant risk of abuse, trafficking and illness.
With £10,000 we could provide
- 1,000 nights of safety for young people, away from the dangers of the street
- a year of primary education for 41 children
- training and start-up capital for 15 permaculture businesses to thrive
- lunches for almost 70 children attending our Drop in Centres for a year
Every penny raised will make a huge difference to young people on the streets as we work with them to resettle them home, re-join education and have brighter futures.
How are people stepping up for street connected children this September?
Bill, our UK Chair of the Board, will be walking 100 miles in September.
To achieve this goal Bill will be walking 10 separate walks, each of 10 miles or more. To make this even trickier, part of each walk will be in each of the 10 Greater Manchester boroughs.
Lucas, our CEO, will be running 125km in 24 hours. This is the distance from Kampala to our residential site in Jinja. This phenomenal distance will be covered with a mix of indoor and outdoor running, including through the night! This is the furthest distance that Lucas has ever done and will be a huge feat of endurance. Lucas wanted to cover this distance as many of the street connected children we work with walk this stretch as they journey in the hope of finding a better life.
Amy, our Development Manager, will be hosting a stall for S.A.L.V.E. where she will be selling some of our ethically traded jewellery, linens and gifts. She’s also going to sell cakes and will be sharing her love of Uganda with anyone who will listen!
Nicola, our former CEO, will be celebrating her 40th birthday dressed as a dinosaur. Yes, you heard it, a dinosaur! Now of course 40 isn’t a dinosaur worthy-age, but she is encouraging as many people as possible to come and join her on Saturday 14th September while she takes in loops of Chorlton Water Park in Manchester. Nicola is aiming to cover 40km between 7am – 7pm.
Anna, our Communications Manager, will be walking 500,000 steps across the month of September. This is a great event that many people can do – working out to just under 17,000 steps a day. Anna would love to have lots of people join her, increase their own steps and support S.A.L.V.E. along the way!
The young people staying at our Halfway Homes and Drug Rehabilitation Centre will be taking part in a non-stop-aerobics session. Physical exercise is something we regularly encourage as part of our programming but this challenge will see the young people complete 3 hours of aerobics with only short breaks! The children love music and dancing and so we know this will be something they enjoy, is good for them and we hope encourages you to get involved, too!
